Fashion Talk : The Emmy's

Today I wanted to mix things up a bit and talk about fashion!  I was having a conversation with a friend at work, and we both mentioned that we hate watching awards shows, but love to see the fashion.  Does anyone else do that?

I wanted to do my own (hopefully nicer) version of Fashion Police and talk about some of my favorite and least favorite looks of the night.  I hope you all enjoy this and will share your favorite looks from the runway!

Favorite Looks

Teyonah Parris: I LOVED this dress!  I thought it was so cute and fun, not to mention really unique from most red carpet gowns.  I loved the polka dot pattern, and it flowed and photographed so well.  I think the hair and makeup looks a bit aged compared to the youthful, fun dress, so that's the only difference I would make.  For any Project Runway fans out there- does this remind you of a dress that Kenley would make?

Christina Hendricks: I'm not sure whose look I like better- Christina or her husband's!  This might not be the best dress for a hot California day, but it's a show stopper.  The detailing is absolutely stunning, and it flatters her gorgeous figure perfectly.  Doesn't it look like she stepped out of the Great Gatsby?

Ellie Kemper: I think I would love just about anything that Ellie would wear because I'm such a big fan of hers.  This dress, though, is so unique and gorgeous that I would love it on anyone!  I love the pattern and the colors.  It stands out so much and is extremely flattering.  I don't think I've ever seen a dress like this, and I love it!

Maggie Gyllenhaal: This dress silhouette happens to be my absolute favorite- it's classic, flattering, and beautiful!  I loved the contrast of the bright purple against the dark blue top.  I also really like how Maggie didn't add a necklace and let her dress be the star!

Lady Gaga: I would have never guessed that this elegant, beautiful woman was Lady Gaga!  What a transformation!  This dress was really simple and gorgeous, with an interesting detail at the hip.  It fit her perfectly!

Best Dressed

Julianne Hough: I loved how unique this dress was, and how revealing it is but doesn't feel inappropriate.  It probably helps that Julianne has an absolutely perfect body!  I also loved how she kept her hair and makeup really simple and elegant, and Derek looked classic and handsome next to her.

Least Favorite Looks

Kerry Washington: I'm usually a huge fan of everything that Kerry wears, but I really didn't like this dress!  It looks really heavy and uncomfortable.  I also think it would be way too warm on a day when everyone was complaining about the heat (and some stars almost passed out).  I thought her hair and makeup looked gorgeous, and those shoes are fantastic!

Tracee Ellis Ross: I don't really understand or like the design on this dress.  It doesn't look like it's finished, and looks more like a craft project.  I also think it fits Tracee awkwardly (especially the top).  I'm not a fan of the jewelry either.  Overall, not a very good look in my opinion!

Naomi Grossman: I don't get this....at all.  Not flattering, not cute, not a fan.  It also looks like she could easily trip over the dress- it's too long!!

Worst Dressed

Heidi Klum: WHY, Heidi, WHY!  I've been absolutely loving Heidi's looks this year on Project Runway and America's Got Talent, but I really don't understand this design at all.  It looks like she's trying to be supermodel Big Bird!  I think she looks gorgeous in anything that she wears, but I don't get this look at all.  It would be a really cute little dress if the mesh was removed along with the sleeve/coverup.

What are you favorite looks from the runway?
Least favorite?
Do you watch award shows?
Am I being too harsh?  I hate to diss anyone, and Dan said I'm being a meanie.  I hope I wasn't too mean- it's all in fun- all these women are gorgeous!

  1. No, Gretchen, you were not being harsh. I love watching the fashions on the awards shows. My favorite was the Kerry Washington dress. It sparkled and moved. I guess they didn't plan on it being so hot that day but she said since it had so much mesh it was cooler. And Lady Gaga..so subdued. I thought the fashions were well designed this time and showed some personality.

    1. I agree- lots of really unique and beautiful dresses. It was really hard to find any that I didn't like! I'm happy to hear you don't think I'm being harsh :)

  2. I didn't watch the emmys, but I always like to look at the outfits afterwards. I have no idea who Teyonah Parris is but hot damn her dress is gorgeous!

    1. Same here! Great, fun dress. Apparently she plays the first African American character on Mad Men. I've never watched that show so I've never heard of her! She's gorgeous though.

  3. Haha I saw a meme of Heidi next to Big Bird... the outfits were similar :) I agree that I love looking at the fashion, but I also love listening to the hosts and seeing who's nominated... I'm just not a fan of all the commercials!

    1. I didn't even see that! Glad I'm not the only one who thought that. Commercials are always the worst..definitely something I don't miss now that I don't have cable :)

  4. I didn't watch the red carpet or the emmys, but I heard about Heidi's dress. Just no. Pick one look and go with it. The color looks good on her but the dress doesn't.

  5. Some of these dresses don't do their wearer justice whatsoever! I do love Julianne's look but I agree with you... too revealing for the event.

    1. I actually thought it was the perfect amount of revealing! I loved that dress (even though I could NEVER pull it off!)

  6. I did not watch the Emmys. I don't think you were too harsh. I am so mean when it comes to people dressing (hypocrite as I wear shorts and tanks) My theory is if you wear it in public all bets are off. I only liked one of those dresses. Thanks really good job

    1. I'm glad you don't think I was harsh! Phew :) I agree- if you're a celebrity and wear something crazy to an award show you should expect some backlash. Glad you liked this!

  7. I thought at first there was a spot on naomi's dress then I realized it's see through and that's her belly button! And what is up with Heidi's platforms!? Also, love Julieanne's everything but I think the headband needs to go. It draws too much attention away from that gorgeous dress!

    1. Eww I know what you mean! I actually really liked her headband but I can completely see your point. That dress was amazing for sure!

  8. I never watch the actual show either lol I only watch the red carpet!

  9. I don't watch award shows either! I usually look up best/worst dressed articles the day after. I loved reading your critiques! I agree with you on Kerry Washington's dress, it looks like chain mail!

  10. This is such a cool post! I love that you branched out and wrote about fashion. I have NO CLUE when it comes to anything fashion-related and I don't even know who most of these women are, because I am so out of touch with media. So sad. I'm a loser. But as loser as I am, I'd never wear that yellow dress. :P

    1. I'm so glad you liked it Suzy! I wear pretty basic stuff myself and I'm not a fashionista or anything, but it definitely is interesting to me! I didn't know most of them either..I just saw pics and saved the ones I liked and didn't like :)

  11. I actually like listening to some of the acceptance speeches, and I feel like you can always expect an inappropriate comment or lash-out these days :) Even though the yellow dress is not my favorite, I can't get over how amazing HK looks after having kids!

    1. True! I heard there was some controversy with Viola Davis's speech which is unfortunate. I agree that Heidi usually looks great, but I didn't think this did her any justice! She's such a beautiful woman and this dress is not good at all!

  12. You're not being harsh at all! I'm with Lauren - I love looking at the fashion and listening to the acceptance speeches. And, if the host is good, I like their bits :) didn't get to watch the Emmy's this year, though!

    1. I would be interested in your thoughts on Andy as a host. I heard he didn't do a good job..I just don't think his humor is best in a hosting gig!
